IT & the change in working practice

Change in working practice is now a major part of cost and carbon reduction for all business sectors.

So what is Change in Working Practice and how does it work?

Instead of a large number of employees travelling to a number a of offices, you consolidate to a large office with a number people working full time and based at this office. You then review how many people you can have not travelling to the office and work from home. This allows a number of big wins for the public sector as they are generally regionally based, say, in a single city or district. So what and where are the gains and loses?

Gain:

Reduced number of building in the estate
and direct benefit of reduced power and heating

Gain:

Reduced travel, this is secondary cost saving and carbon reduction

The other side of the coin is to meet this change in working practice any business will have to invest in different IT practices that will have a huge offset in the gains listed above.

From 2000 to 2006 IT's Carbon Footprint doubled, by the end of 2009 it will double again...                                                                                                                                                                                                                                           Computers now produce more carbon emissions than the airline industry (BBC)...                                                                                                                                                                                                                                           If you post a picture on Facebook and view it 20 times that is the equivalent of leaving a 100 watt light bulb on for 30 minutes...                                                                                                                                                                                                                                           5 Servers produce 20,000kg of Carbon per annum. You need to plant 40 trees offset this amount of carbon...                                                                                                                                                                                                                                           Delivery of power to most cities is now major issue in any building project. The grid around London’s docklands is now full until after the 2012 Olympics...                                                                                                                                                                                                                                           Recent research shows that one in five companies have a decreasing budget to deliver the same or more. Power is part of that budget. Standard Life recently paid millions to move to new state of the art data center. They reduced power consumption from 350Kw to 210Kw per hours...
